Nah, I’m the same way. There’s stuff I love, but I don’t obsess over any series or characters or pairings in that teenagerly way anymore. I also don’t have “fandoms.” Just things I really like and things I don’t really like.

Sometimes I want to buy, like, a Firefly shirt or something, and then I feel awkward because I’m not enough of a rabid fan to actually wear a whole SHIRT, am I? :P

We had so much fun together! I LOVE it when I can be in a costuming group with friends. It’s even better that this wound up being spur-of-the-moment - we decided to do this together on Wednesday, right before we saw STAR TREK together. We wound up playing Rock Band together, walked around the con, and just laughed and had a great time. Unfortunately, we couldn’t find a Batman! Next time. He doesn’t stand a chance.

No, this is a variation on a circle parry and a counter circle parry. Both are commonly taught in French and Italian style foil fencing.

A circle parry is when you avoid your opponents blade by moving your blade around theirs in a circle. A counter circle parry is circling around your opponents circle so that they can’t get their blade past to stab you.

When two fencers know each other well, this often happens. It becomes a game of chicken, it only ends when someone is willing to risk leaving an opening so that they can launch a different attack.

The foil version of this happens at least once a practice on my college fencing team. The only difference is that the blades are horizontal rather than diagonal.

Hmmm. This is an interesting one. I guess my main piece of advice would be - remember that it’s okay to speak up. If somebody treats you in a way you don’t like, firmly and politely tell them you don’t care for it. If you see someone struggling to communicate their displeasure, firmly and politely step in to reinforce what they’re saying (but ONLY if you’re absolutely sure that they are uncomfortable, otherwise you might cause trouble!). If you see someone doing something inappropriate to someone else without their knowledge, like upskirt shots, firmly and maybe not-so-politely call them out.

We all need practice to learn to speak up for ourselves and each other. You won’t always manage it properly - sometimes you’ll be left with a bad taste in your mouth because you could have done more, and sometimes you’ll accidentally offend someone who meant well. But mistakes happen, and practice is important, so just keep on keepin’ on. :)

There are a few other nonverbal tricks you can use, too, like changing your pose when someone taking a picture with you is too handsy, or moving in front of your friend to cover their rear when someone is taking backside pictures without permission. You’ll learn some methods like that along the way, too. :)

Dragon*Con is definitely a party con with a lot of drinking and groping, so stay alert and keep your wits about you (not getting too trashed will help with this, too). But hey, above all, have fun! Consensual groping is awesome and may very well happen, LOL! See you there! :)
